HOT SMOKIN KID, born 2008, mare Mellow Kid - here 5 days old

Catherine Larsen, Peterborough / Canada,  April 5th, 2008:

"I purchased Mellow Kid from Bill Rinzema. Hot Smokin Chex was chosen to sire a foal with Mellow Kid because of his great conformation and his athletic abilities, especially his powerful slides. We hope that Mellow's foal would inherit these traits. Mellow, herself, is a strong mare, and although she has limited showing, Bill Rinzema won the Ontario Quarter Horse Summerama Circuit Champion award with her this past summer while she was in foal. My 17 year old daughter was the Reserve Youth champion with her in this same circuit.

Mellow had her foal on March 25. He is a palomino and his barn name is 'Charlie'. He is a big boy and we are very pleased with him. From what we can see his is going to be very strong and athletic. My daughter has hopes that she can ride him in competitions in a few years."

Smokin Ace, born 2007, Sumac Farms, Canada
"I watched Mike McEntire ride 'Smokey' at the Congress Futurity and he was head and shoulders above the others - I'm no judge but I could see that his final run was so much better than the others - and it was tough competition.

Then I watched him at the OKC futurity and again was impressed.

I tried to breed to him, but then the owner at the time moved him before the season started.
When he came back to Sunny Pines NC farms NC. for a breeding season 2 years ago, I jumped at the chance to breed to him as I saw him as the next BIG name in reining. I have a mare by 'Hollywood Dunnit and one by Surprise Enterprise' and so any foals I got would have an impressive pedigree to start with."

Kevin Showman, USA, October 19th, 2007 and June 3rd, 2008:

colt born 2007

"I was wondering what happened to Smoky. I am a client and friend of both Charlie and Tammye Hutton and Mike and Nathalie McEntire. I had horses in training with Mike when he was training and showing Smoky and I always loved his athletic ability and temperament.
I liked him so much that I bred a mare to Smoky last year and I have a 2007 bay colt out of a Reminic mare that has $9000+ NRHA earnings."

"We chose to breed to Hot Smokin Chex because of his athletic ability, personality and our relationship with Charlie & Tammye Hutton and Mike & Nathalie McEntire. I had a horse in training with Mike when he had Smokey as a three year old and Big Chex To Cash as a two year old. I was always impressed with their athletic ability, especially Smokey's "sweeping" turn around and both of their stopping ability.

"Brownie" NUCASTLE BROWN in May 2008I am very pleased with how our colt is physically developing. I think he is an attractive colt, though he is going through various growth spurts. He seems to have a very good mind and is easy to handle."

Barbara & Roger Brazeau, USA, sent a photo of their filly March 23rd, 2008:

"Out of the finalists in Smokey's 3 year old futurity year, even though he did not win the NRHA futurity, Smokey was my favorite. I was happy to breed to him when he was at Select Breeders. When you breed several mares to outside stallions, cost factor is very important.

The foal that we have this year, more than meets my expectations, as well as Uli's foal."
